SU-2300 Line Fastener Product Selector

SU-2300 Line Fasteners are designed for aircraft use and are specified on external access panels and internal equipment.

They are also specified on demanding non-aircraft applications, where their special qualities of vibration endurance and limited sheet separation under overload are needed, or where an enclosed or floating receptacle is required.

SU-2300 Line Fasteners are approved under MIL-F-5591C* for all sizes, sizes 2, 5, and 7, all stud types, types 1, 2, and 3, Class A floating and Class B rigid receptacles, and for the installation holes and stud retainers covered by styles 1 and 2.

SU-2300 Line studs are made of a higher-tensile alloy steel than ST-1200 Line studs. Also, they are available in .030" increments which reduces the extent of sheet separation in case of tensile overload.

This form can be used to assist in determining the size of stud which will be required for your application. Fill in the requested information and click on the "Calculate" button. The results will be presented at the bottom of the page.

This process is the same as the Selection Procedure outlined in the catalog and on the SU-2300 Line page.

1. Select a fastener size using this performance table:

Mechanical Properties
MIL-F-5591C* (Style 1 - Types 1-2-3 Class A & B)

Size AN
Size DFCI
Shank Diameter (in) 3/8 5/16 7/32
Locking Torque - Minimum (in-lb) 7.5 5.0 3.5
Locking Torque - Maximum (in-lb) 18 12 8
Initial Tension Minimum (lb) 50 35 15
Tension & Shear - Rated (lb) 700 500 200
Tension & Shear - Plus 50% (lb) 1050 750 300
Locking Stop Strength (in-lb) 80 60 30
Endurance (Cycles) 40,000 25,000 5,000

2. Select an appropriate head style.

3. Select a stud retainer:

The following retainers are available but cannot be sized by this program. Please call for assistance in sizing using these retainers.

  • Retaining Spring (1219-24): Holds the stud in the locking position for alignment with the receptacle.
  • Full Grommets (1271, 1276): Sizes 5 and 6. Prevents panel hole wear, protects the panel finish, and reduces stud play.

4. Select a receptacle type:

Choose either a rigid or a floating receptacle. SU-2300 receptacles are enclosed to protect the parts, prevent the loss of plating chips and to provide a smooth stud entry.

5. Select an appropriate finish.

Stud Receptacle Suffix Description Specification(s)
---N4FNickel plate .0004 thick, with copper undercoatingQQ-N-290, CLASS 1, GRADE F
Z3CTZinc Trivalent Clear .0003 thick. Trivalent Chromate Clear with SealerASTM-B-633, Type III, SC 2, Clear
Z3YTZinc Trivalent Yellow .0003 thick, Trivalent Chromate Yellow Dye with Sealer

We recommend the Z3CT finish instead of the Z3YT finish. The Z3CT finish is much more cost effective and provides the same salt spray benefits as the Z3YT finish.
ASTM-B-633, Type II, SC 2, Yellow

6. Now determine the Panel, Gap, and Support thicknesses.

Now determine the thickness of material in which the stud is retained (panel) and to which the receptacle is attached (support). Then determine the total gap between the level of stud head contact with material and the level of receptacle contact, in the closed position, include any air gaps and any part of the stud retainer thickness not buried in material already measured. Refer to the examples on each receptacle page, which will guide you to the length selection table.

7. Click on the "Calculate" button to see the resulting part numbers.

Every effort has been made to verify the accuracy of the calculations in this program. However, your application may be unique and not allowed for in the software. The calculations should be verified with an authorized sales engineer before purchasing the parts for your specific application.
